Doug Johnstone Church Pastor
Doug and his wife Phyllis grew up in Oakland, CA. His BA was in Psychology and his Masters from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. They served 19 years with the Lutheran Church in Venezuela. While there, Doug traveled and worked in over 20 countries, was elected the national church president, worked in church planting and theological education, and served as the field mission director for 10 years. He also served as the Director of the Spanish Lutheran Hour with programs broadcast in 18 countries. Now with 28 years in Southern California, this is the third congregation he has served as the called pastor. In addition he has written Old Testament seminary courses, led training in urban/ethnic ministry, served as a mission and ministry consultant to congregations in the region, and worked extensively in interfaith activities. Doug and Phyllis enjoy traveling, experiencing different cultures, and spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Jo Tschopp Church Chairperson
Jo is a native Californian and has traveled many places but loves coming home to Sierra Madre. She has a Masters’ Degree in Multi-Cultural Bilingual Education. She is passionate about teaching and has experience working with preschool through high school students and adults. Currently Jo teaches Sunday School, adult Bible Class and a weekly preschool Bible class. She is a licensed Parish Ministry Assistant and a trained Stephen Ministry Leader. Jo enjoys family activities, sewing, reading, and gardening. The Bible verse that drives her is: Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Jill Vidal Preschool Director
Jill is a native of the Los Angeles area growing up in Monterey Park. Jill attended Pasadena City College with certification in Early Childhood Education and Administration. Since the early 1990’s Jill has taught ages 3 to 6 years starting as an assistant and promoting to co-teacher, lead teacher, school administrator and now director. Jill has also been involved in children’s ministry, VBS, outreach and missions ministries. In 2006 Jill and her family relocated to Plano, Texas. There she received her Montessori certification. Jill spent 4 years as the Montessori lead teacher at Children's Garden in Plano. In 2011 Jill was hired on as school administrator for a startup school located in Richardson, Texas. With a desire to return to the Los Angeles area Jill relocated back in 2015 and shortly after came on staff at First Lutheran Church and SONshine House Preschool starting September 2015. Jill has expressed it’s been a blessing to be back at “home” feeling God’s work at hand. She enjoys spending time with family; her husband, Alan, and two children, Shane and Maya.
Stella Yau 丘樹芳
Stella was born in Hong Kong and grew up mostly in Northern California since she was 9 years old. She went to UC Davis and studied Economics and Communications. She grew up in the church and has a heavy heart for the youth, college, worship, and mission ministries. She loves the LORD and she loves the ministries and missions of the local church. She and her husband, Ron, moved to Southern California in early 2014 where she attended Azusa Pacific Seminary. She graduated Spring 2016 with a Masters' Degree in Pastoral Studies emphasizing in Church Leadership and Development. She is a Mission Director with LINC Los Angeles out of First Lutheran Church and SONshine House Preschool in Temple City as well as the Assistant City Director of LINC LA. Stella and her husband enjoy traveling, hiking, meeting up with friends, and exploring different cities.
